Sweet Violet Top Crochet Pattern

Love the look of the project and really want to make it. But this pattern has a confusing aspect. It calls for 2 cakes of Sheepjes Whirl but the pattern picture shows only one cycle of variation. Also, I am NOT a tight crocheter but, I have to use a MUCH larger hook to get anywhere near gauge. So, are the two cakes held together? Should I alternate cakes row to row? Should I just crochet the front from one cake and the back from the other?
